Thanks for your comment. Now I know how Einstein felt after Hiroshima. On the other hand I never came across data corruption from just reading a media storage and that's exactly what the hint was talking about:
You cannot make changes to the pictures, nor can you drag the pictures individually to your iPhoto library, but you can see everything on the camera.
Is it equally a bad idea to go through the pictures on the card with the Finder? What about all the applications that the camera manufacturers offer, those that have a feature to preview the pictures you're about to transfer? And is it OK if I preview the pictures on the camera itself?

I'm very sorry my hint tore open an old wound of yours.
