A prize for bad advice?

2nd place goes to the "Work directly with camera storage cards in iPhoto" hint!?!?

I'm sorry, but this sets a bad precedent for rewarding a hint that is just plain bad advice.

Ask anyone who has ever lost one-of-a-kind pictures, or corrupted an entire card (necessitating a reformat) because they engaged in this practice. You might get away with it 99 out of 100 times, but on that one occasion where you destroy images because of a power failure, or some other momentary glitch and you'll be cursing the practice.

I commented about this after the original article, and EVERY reputable camera-tech author will tell you: ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!! Copy your files from the card to your hard drive before you do ANYTHING else with the files. Just get them off the card and onto the hard drive.

I ususally love this site, and all of the extremely interesting and valuable tips I glean here, but this tip gets two thumbs down, and you deserve a pie in the face for awarding it a prize, Rob.

You goofed, man.

A prize for bad advice?

Thanks for your comment. Now I know how Einstein felt after Hiroshima. On the other hand I never came across data corruption from just reading a media storage and that's exactly what the hint was talking about:
You cannot make changes to the pictures, nor can you drag the pictures individually to your iPhoto library, but you can see everything on the camera.
Is it equally a bad idea to go through the pictures on the card with the Finder? What about all the applications that the camera manufacturers offer, those that have a feature to preview the pictures you're about to transfer? And is it OK if I preview the pictures on the camera itself?

I'm very sorry my hint tore open an old wound of yours.

A prize for bad advice?

I think one of us is reading the hint wrong.

It only allows you to view the images, not edit them, so it is hard to see how this could cause any damage. I'd say that the title of the hint is flawed ("work with" implies more than just viewing), but the hint is useful if you want to import a subset of images into iPhoto.
