i'm clueless about windows. can anyone explain what/where the "registry" is, and how to get there?

You're right, for an osx site they don't go into enough detail :)

in windows, go to Start -> Run and type "regedit" (shortcut: windows key +R opens the Run command).

this will open the Registry Editor. the Registry is a central repository of settings in Windows, especially for Windows functions.

drill down the tree as the OP listed and you should find the final variable you need to change.
