And there's more...

With the original .tivo file or any MPEG-1 encoded file, you can delete the show from your TiVo to save space and then share the file back to the TiVo when you want to watch the show again. Do this through the Mac version of Tivo Desktop: Video sharing is normally hidden, so hold down Command as you open TiVo Desktop in System Preferences. Check the TiVo commuity forums (linked from tivo.com) for more info.

Also, I don't want to get anyone into trouble so I'll just say this:

"If only there was a free Windows program that strips the DRM from .tivo files, I could run that in Parallels Desktop to turn the files into .mpg files. These will play in the Mac version of the free VNP video player (find it on SourceForge.org)."

Note that if you share your un-DRMed TiVo recordings on the Internet, TiVo can read your Media Access Key and terminate your account. The law may or may not protect you under what used to be called "fair use" whereby you download eposides of Robot Chicken onto your phone, to watch on the train to work.
