for my nework drive i have been using cifs://user@drive/folder
I have a few folders on my desktop linked to folders on NAS drive.
even if not mounted i can drag and drop , it will give u the can't do that symbol, however, it will go ahead and mount that folder and add contents to it.

forgot to mention if you do a control-k from finder and put in
cifs://user@drive (without folder)
you will get a pop-up window asking which folder to mount
