Macbook and Boot Camp video driver conflict workaround
Authored by: dczward on Aug 04, '06 03:56:07PM

Damn! I've been having this problem, and it's been driving me nuts. I've suspected that it was Boot Camp / video driver / Boot ROM related, but I hadn't been able to pin it down. One of the clues was that if I did a permission repair from the MacBook Pro CD, it would sometimes repair permissions on the video drivers.

I've tried 1) taking out the battery, unplugging the power, and holding down the power button for 5 secs (resetting the PMU); 2) Plugging in/putting in the battery, and holding down the power button, forcing it to reload the ROM, and 3) doing PRAM zapping (3 times in a row). I've tries those singly, in pairs, and in various combos, (1, 2, 3; 3, 1, 2; etc. etc. ) and none of them work consistently -- it just eventually "works" again. I'll try the option key trick some more, but that doesn't always work either: if the video doesn't come on, then you don't know if you _have_ options to choose from or not.

I've also tried toggling the "startup disk" off the Mac OS X partition, saving, then back on the Mac OS X partition, and saving. That seems to help for a while.

I guess this is why Boot Camp is still Beta.
