Remove the dot extension from folder names

That's odd. Since 10.4 the OS always prompts me whether I want to change an extension, be it on a file or a folder, unless I am removing one from a folder. In that case it lets me do it without a dialog box popping up at all.

I always set the Finder to display all extensions. I've never had it prevent me from changing an extension entirely. To my recollection, before 10.4 there were no restrictions at all.

The hint I'd like to see is how to get rid of this entirely. All these restrictions are to stop innocent/ignorant/stupid users from delinking files from their applications.

The finder HIDES the extension by default when the user removes it on the icon. This was done to keep anal people from removing them and then emailing them to the other 80% of the world that has to have them.

Direct manuipulation is done in Get Info as the hint shows.
