An easy way to view message counts in Mail

Using the column 'Number' you are not viewing the count of the messages, you are viewing the order in which the mail was received.

I think like Rob pointed out, referring to the title bar to see how many messages are inside a particular mailbox is the easiest.

I would be willing to hear when exactly Mail fails to display the count of how many messages are in a mailbox as I have never seen it fail.

To see why exactly this may get confusing, go to the 'sent' mailbox and sort by the number field. Then sort by the 'date sent' column so most recently sent is listed at the top.

Exactly. It doesn't make sense to have a column that shows the number of items in the list. The Number column is just that, the message number. So if you have, say, 20 message in a mailbox/folder, but you've received and deleted thousands of messages, the newest messages will show an extremely high number, yet you only have 10 messages in the mailbox/folder. There's no way you can use that as the current message count. Therefore, this is not a hint and should be removed.

Actually, I just tested this and the original poster is correct.

I created a new mailbox, copied 10 messages into and they were numbered 1 through 10.

I deleted a message, and the numbers adjusted themselves to be 1 through 9.

I deleted another message, and the numbers adjusted to 1 through 8.

I gave up after 5 tries.
