10.4: Fix Word save issues on SMB-mounted Homes
Authored by: ephramz on Jul 06, '06 07:29:00AM

I'm having a slightly different problem where I get the error "This is not a valid file name" whenever I try to save a document in Word (v11.2 on OS 10.4.7) on a network shared volume. I've tried all these solutions:
- create and set the correct permissions (chmod 1770) on /Volumes/ServerHD/.TemporaryItems and /Volumes/ServerHD/Users/username/.TemporaryItems
- deleted and created a new Normal template file in case it was infected with some macro virus (as some have suggested)

I can create and modify files in the terminal in the /Volumes/ServerHD/.TemporaryItems directory no problem from the same user Word is running under, so permissions don't seem to be the problem there.

As others have mentioned, I can save once with a new document, then subsequent saves don't work. Trying to edit and save an existing network file never works.

I don't have any weird characters in the filename or the path I'm trying to save to except a space in one of the directory names. Could this be a problem? Any other ideas or solutions?

Thanks for any help with this annoying recurrent problem.
