10.4: Create an Intel-bootable HFS+/NTFS external drive

Turns out you can boot 10.4 from a USB 2.0 drive as well as a FW drive from a Intel Mac. I used the 'Restore' function in Disk Utility to image a bootable volume onto an external partition. I don't think it's possible to install Windows to an external drive via installer CD (at least not a USB drive) because the installer insists on using a partition on the internal drive.
I haven't had success using the 'Restore' function in Disk Utility to create a bootable Windows partition on an external drive. If somebody could give more specific details on how to do that I would appreciate it.

From what I've seen you can put the majority of the Windows OS on an external drive, but you still have to have the mbr and boot files on an internal disk otherwise Windows will not boot.
