10.4: Create a simpler PowerPC and Intel boot drive

You can make /var /tmp /etc etcetera invisible either by using the SetHidden command located on your Tiger install DVD in this folder:
/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/\
Installation/Packages/OSInstall.mpkg/Contents/Resources

Or by setting the visibility of said files/folders using the Developer Tools command SetFile like so:
sudo SetFile -a V -P /tmp

Using SetHidden must be done while booted from the problematic partition, so I recommend using the SetFile method, which can be done anytime, anywhere.

More on this issue can be found at the following Apple KBase article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301677

I have also posted some information and a disc image that contains both the SetHidden command as well as a script that will properly set the visibility of all folders on the boot drive:

Hope this helps.
