You can access the AKO email instructions on the Army Home Page here:

http://www.army.mil/ako/email/mac.html

It provides information on adding the DOD certs to your keychain as well as how to setup Apple Mail to access your AKO email. Even though the Mail instructions state that you can use IMAP, I would suggest you stick with POP for now.

On a related note, if you are running Tiger, it is quite easy to use your CAC for logging in to AKO (Safari) and digitally signing your mail (Mail). In the future there will be an AKO help page that details how to use the CAC on a Mac.

Please note that the AKO Mac help pages are written by Mac users at AKO. So the information has been tested and known to work.

A person at the Naval Postgraduate School that has written an excellent document detailing the steps for getting your CAC working on your Mac. Depending on the part number of the SCR331 reader you have, you may need to do an intermediate firmware flash before the final one detailed in the document.
