Easily create 128x128 PNGs from icons

Custom folder icons are stored in a hidden file within the folder named "Icon" with a capital I and trailing CR (^M). But much more useful than that factoid is Gerti's hint below, which is what I've been doing. And then guardian34's method (farther down) is even faster and easier! Just select in the Finder, copy, go to Preview, ⌘N, and save in your desired format.

Thanks for pointing those out! I'll be trying 'em today.

Seems like my next hurdle is this: how to paste [or otherwise create] an icon with transparency, using only what I've got [no spending money]. I've got OSX, Photoshop, Fireworks ....

When I snag the icons and open then in Photoshop, transparency is preserved. Then when I change my icon to suit me, and do a Copy Merged, I paste into the Info panel in Finder. Transparency is gone, all filled with white.

What's the secret to giving your file a custom icon that has transparency?
