Instead of holding the ALT button while you startup your mac, you could select booting partition in System Preferences > Startup disk. It does see the Windows partition also. Maybe most of you already know this.

I only use the holding the ALT button when my iMac is powered on and I want to boot into Windows instead of OS X (or vica versa if Windows is my primary boot partition)
