To make this helpful to all you people griping about the keys chosen, simply try Command-return. It does the same thing.

It's just like holding command down and clicking a link to open that link in a new window (or tab). Anytime you are going to go to a webpage (whether from the URL bar, the google toolbar, etc.) you can hold command down to open it in a new tab behind the current one without activating your new page.

Similarly, you can hold down command and click links in Mail (and Preview, I think, maybe elsewhere too) and it will open those pages in Safari (if it is your default browser) without switching focus out of Mail. I use this all the time to open multiple links in an email without having to switch back and forth between the programs.
