10.4: Search Samba volumes with Spotlight

Keep in mind that the OS X kernel plays no role in the final write-to-disk for any file on a mounted networked volume...the kernel on the computer that is exporting the volume has this responsibility.

Because of this, don't expect your Spotlight index on that network volume to get updated. Its only 100% accurate immediately after you force an index, and changes thereafter to any file, either by you or any other computer mounting the volume, are not accounted for.

Do you know of anyone whose developed a shell script that will recreate the index every night, at say midnight. That way, each day you'd have a fresh index to work with.

I am also experimenting with Searchlight RSS. Its a beautiful way to get PC users hooked on the Mac. If I can get this script to work, my PC users will be future Mac-addicts...
