Open Acrobat Reader, select Preferences from the Adobe Reader menu, select Internet from the list, uncheck the top option "Display PDF ... "

This is a lot easier.

Actually, unchecking the preference doesn't "stick", which is, I think, the point of the article. The next time you open a PDF with acrobat or reader, the preferences reset themselves so that the next time you view a pdf in Safari, the adobe plugin launches. I've had this happen numerous times.
