My reasoning goes like this. Most monitors (especially the newer ones from Apple) are much wider than they are tall, so you have more room for a dock over to the side than at the bottom.

Pinning to the top is good because I know anything I have installed in the dock will never budge by a single pixel. Muscle memory alone can get me where I need to go a lot of the time. If I place it in the middle or at the bottom, the icons keep sliding up and down as the dock grows or shrinks, and I hate moving targets.

Right versus left is mostly a bow to tradition. I am used to switching apps from the top right like in OS 9. I keep the dock visible but small enough to stay out of the way of hard drive icons and such. I don't use magnification (again, due to the moving targets).
