On the right -- to mimic OS 9, 8, 7

Here's my rationale: If you set the Finder icon in the Dock to open to your Home folder, it's showing you essentially the same thing you'd see if you double-clicked on your hard drive icon in previous versions of the OS. So I put the Dock on the right, and it stretches the entire length of that side of the screen. So my Finder icon is top right, just like the hard drive icon was in pre-X days, and my Trash icon is bottom right, just like in pre-X days. Also, in pre-X days, I kept my Applications and Documents folders over there on the right, as well as icons for all of my most commonly used applications -- e-mail, web browser, word processor. I've put all those same folders and apps in the Dock. (I use LaunchBar to launch all other apps.)

So for me, just from a mouse-navigation standpoint, putting the Dock on the right made the most sense in terms of making the move from 9 to X as seamless as possible. But I never used the Apple Menu to launch apps the way many other folks did, so I can see why having apps on the right is not desirable for everyone. I also understand why others might not put the Dock on the right because it sometimes interferes with palettes, and there's also that irritation of having new icons on the desktop show up sort of underneath the Dock. But I've learned to live with that.
