I keep the Dock visible on the bottom right, using the following defaults command:

defaults write com.apple.dock pinning end

I think I found this here, originally. It's easier to enter one command in Terminal than to download and install Tinkertool...

I don't find the Dock as irritating as others apparently do, but it's certainly not all it could be. Using custom icons for folders containing sub-items, and a two-button mouse to right-click on them, makes it easier. I like using as few haxies and special software gizmos as possible, since I have to use several different machines.
