A fix for a very slow contextual menu in the Finder
Big problems here too...every time i do an "Open with" context menu, I get, after a wait of 30-60 secs! a menu with multiple instances of app1, multiples of app2, multiples of app3 etc etc.
The Best Solution IMHO
As already noted it looks like it's definitely a problem with LaunchServices. I tried to open a screenshot I recently snapped in something other than the default Preview app and found a dozen different possible choices with each of them listed three times in the pull down "OpenWith" contextual menu. The inevitable search lead me here, but I'm not real comfortable with playing around in the terminal yet. Then I remembered seeing a "Rebuild LaunchServices Database" option in a nifty utility called ****tail (http://****tail.maintain.se), (Wow! I'm getting censored here for trying to type something that's simply a universal alcoholic refreshment available at any restaurant or bar) which I purchased not long after moving to OSX. I fired it up, clicked on the "System" icon, clicked the appropriate checkbox, and was quickly informed I should restart. One more click and everything is now just fine. No more multiple menu items, and no problems with icons or anything else. Please check it out. |
