10.4: Use the Apple Remote with other applications

The Apple Remote's buttons are processed by a process called "rcd" which then simply runs AppleScripts to control a set of hardcoded applications. That is, QT Player, iPhoto, etc. does not support the Apple Remote. It's the other way around -- the "rcd" process supports QT Player, iPhoto, etc.

You can try
strings /System/Library/CoreServices/rcd.app/Contents/MacOS/rcd | less
on the Terminal to browse through the AppleScripts embedded in rcd.

It appears the list is: iPhoto, QuickTime Player, iTunes, DVD Player, Keynote. Oh, hey, you got it all already. :)

Can one take from this the implication that the Remote could be given expanded (or at least different) functionality??

Yes - could it control VLC, for example?

The implication from this is unfortunately that it seems only Apple can add support for new applications.

I think we can expect to see some Cool Stuff happening with the Apple Remote soon. This page suggests a fair amount of progress has been made in figuring out how to programmatically interface with the remote.

Once some enterprising developers out there have put together a tried & tested framework to allow apps to use the remote, we should see some utilities which will allow us to attach appliescripts to buttons (amongst other interesting uses!)
