10.4: Install OS X without first rebooting from DVD
Authored by: mortimersnerd on Feb 22, '06 06:38:13AM

I have used this method successfully many times. It's convenient, fast, and flexible--

--UNTIL NOW:

If I try to install 10.4 to another volume while booted from any volume to which the 10.4.5 update (delta or combo) has already been applied, the installation fails at the very end with "There were errors during the installation...Please try again."

install.log (from Console) reveals that bless is invoking the (undocumented and apparently unavailable) --bootefi option.

Has 10.4.5 been in some way(s) Intel-ified even on PPC machines? (one a QS2002, the other an 8600 with XPostFacto)

Installation while actually booted from the DVD, OR while booted from a volume running any Tiger other than 10.4.5 (i.e. 10.4.4 or earlier), is as successful as it's always been.
