Use a smart playlist instead

A smart playlist is much better solution. You can create one playlist with criteria of "is podcast" and "last played" is "not in the last" 999 months. But I prefer to create podcast specific smart playlists. So the same thing, but include as criteria the name of the podcast. Make as many smart playlists as you have podcasts. New episodes are automatically added to that podcasts smart playlist and they are removed after you have finished listening to them (note that if you want to skip a podcast, just scroll through it to the end via the clickwheel. I.e. press the center button, then scroll to the end and let go. It will be marked as played and thus be removed form the list.) It's a playlist, so after you listen to the first one it will go to the next, etc.

I use a method similar to this on my 3G iPod because it doesn't have a podcasts menu.

I was offered a penny for my thoughts, so I gave my two cents... I got ripped off.
