Not really surprising

JetDirect is the network encapsulation used to get data to the print server - not the communication protocol used to talk to the printer itself. JetDirect is a really simple encapsulation: the client just opens a TCP socket and sends data which the print server forwards to the printer. That's why it's implemented by most print servers.
