Before changing any files found in an Application Package, you should always make a back-up of the file. Most Application Package files, (All that I have come across), will happily ignore a new folder in the package. Whenever I change any Package files, I create a "backup" folder inside the package and copy unchanged versions of the file I am changing. If anything goes wrong I can just copy the backup back into the root level of the package.
