startup key combinations I want to see
As a mac tech supporting over 400 Macs, here's two startup combinations I would like to see.

Killing power during boot doesn't seem like such a good idea. Most tray-loading macs I've seen can be safely ejected with the power off by pushing the end of a bent paper clip into the tiny hole designated for that purpose. You can also use Open Firmware to eject the CD and do a bunch of other stuff without booting the computer. You'll have to look elsewhere (eg Apple Support) for more info on that.

Actually, I think the first one could be solved by letting the "C" key work as a wait-command as well. If no bootable CD/DVD is detected, then eject and wait for it.

What about starting up when holding down the alt key? Isn't it possible to release the tray in the "choose startup disk" screen?

Sorry, didn't read your post well enough.

mccallister - In situations such as your first where you need to boot a shut down Mac from a CD, I usually boot into Open Firmware (command-option-o-f) then type "eject cd" to eject the CD tray, insert the CD then type "eject cd" again to close the cd tray. I then type "mac-boot" to start the boot process and hold down the "c" key. Not as elegant as a "wait" boot command, but certainly better than killing power mid-boot. |
