Install a LaserJet 1000 printer driver
Authored by: Tarrkus on Jan 29, '06 08:08:25AM

I just wanted to give a bit of an update to this hint and also share how I was able to remotely print from my mac to a Laserjet 1020 hooked up to an XP box.

First, for 10.4, instead of holding the alt-key and hitting add to get to the "Advanced" menu, hit the add button, then from the next dialog box, hold down alt and click on "More printers...". "Advanced" should now be available from the drop down menu. Other than that, the instructions in the parent post, or on the following page (I used the should LaserJet 1000 instructions) be sufficient:

This is also where the mac driver you need is located at, I used the monochrom driver for my 1020. Be very sure to follow the directions exactly, especially regarding reboots, or things may not work.

If you want to hook up the printer to an XP box, and then be able to share the printer to a 10.4 machine:
-- first follow the directions for installing the printer drivers on the 10.4 machine (in my experience you must hook up the printer to the 10.4 machine while installing the driver).
--Then use the CD included with the printer and follow the printers directions for installing the printer on the XP machine.
--Set up sharing for this printer on the XP machine (The XP wizards should get you through this pretty well)
--Open the printer setup utility on the mac
--Click add
--Click more printers...
--Select "Windows Printing" -- you should now be able to select the proper work group and printer.
--For printer model select the Zenographics CUPS driver. This is found under "EPS", not "HP"

You should now be able to print to the shared printer from your mac. Note that not all applications are going to be able to print succesfully to the shared printer like this. Most should, but some like Adobe Acrobat Reader will not succesfully print... I am unsure of all the technical reasons for this, but I believe it has to do with how the application submitts a print job.

I did this succesfully using 10.4.4 and an XP machine that was up to date as of Jan 28, 2006. I used a LaserJet 1020. You should be aware that neither Zenographics or HP seem to endorse or support using the zenographics driver with the 1020, so do so at your own risk.

Thank you very much! I have been trying to install my HP Laserjet 1000 to my PPC and my iBook for months now. When I first came across the thread, I thought it would still not work because they were running 10.3. Then I came acroos your post.

I also tried the HPJIS process but it took me half a day without any success. Then this post came along!

I am very grateful and I will pass on this information to all my friends. Thanks again!
