iPhoto Catalog
Basically if you want you can go to preferences - advanced and uncheck Copy files to iPhoto Library folder when adding to Library. What this does is if you have files on a disc, so far seems to work with any mounted disk. It makes Alias's of the images and then makes thumbnails. If you happen to have a large backup on offline storage disk, when this disk is not mounted iPHoto still can use the thumbnails in the library to keyword, name, rate... etc. (can't edit). If you want to edit or use the photos in other ways simply mount the disk, even with iPhoto running and now you have full access to the images. Kind of like what this hint suggested. But it requires no extra work on your part.

Thanks! Now I get it.

If you uncheck that option then what happens to photos that are imported from your camera? |
