Downloaded the .tar.gz archive, uncompressed it and double clicked on startup.jar...

I had downloaded Java 1.5 (J2SE 5.0) when it came out. The thing I did was to run the Java Prefernces application found in /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/ and, in the general tab put J2SE 5.0 as the version to use (a popup in the top) and in the settings field (second part of the window) put J2SE 5.0 first, before J2SE 1.4.2

I don't remember doing anything else...
