10.4 only!
Authored by: wootest on Jan 06, '06 07:55:00AM

Discontinious selections were introduced in 10.4 ("Tiger"). Hold alt and drag for a 'rectangular' selection (only truly rectangular with monospace fonts); Hold command and drag for discontinious selections.

None of the above hints works for me in Mail on a fresh install [updated to latest] of Tiger. I've only been using this box for email and web browsing since the reinstall and haven't had time to reinstall APE or other extensions that I could imagine might conflict with these features.

In Safari, I notice I can only do that discontiguous selection thing in a text field like the one I'm using to type this post.

In TextEdit, it works like a champ. Since I'm installing Adobe CS2 now, I'll be interested to see if the same selection techniques will work in InDesign. Since you mentioned that Option-dragging selects a rectangular region: now I see why Option-dragging to copy text doesn't work anymore. Thanks!

10.4 only!

Correction: these tips only seem to work in a Mail message that I'm viewing as plain text. I usually set my Mail clients to do this, out of old habit, but I had not yet set up the new Mail to do it. Some messages arrive plain text, some don't, and the first messages I tried this on were rich text, not plain text. Only works with plain text.

Does not work with Copy / Paste / Drag / Drop
Authored by: alexmathew on Jan 07, '06 10:10:23AM

10.4.3
Mail
I can select non-contiguous - but cannot paste or drag and drop - only the first word is pasted/dropped.
I set the font to monospaced, viewing in text mode only....
I wish it would work - very useful hint.
