A fix for an iTunes crash when playing videos
Authored by: RubberDuck on Dec 28, '05 09:26:25PM

I had an issue playing mp4 video (video podcasts) in iTunes.
iTunes wouldn't crash, but the video would get almost half way thru and then stall.

I had a number of mp4 Quicktime codecs installed, and while Quicktime played mp4 content fine using whatever codec it deemed best, iTunes seemed to prefer the 3ivx codec which was causing the problem. Removal of the 3ivx component from /Library/QuickTime fixed my problem.

And while on the subject of codecs and muxed content, here are a couple of codecs I find useful...

Recently released DivX 6 for Mac, gives much smoother playback of DivX avi files.
AC3 codec, for playing seemingly unplayable DivX AVI files with AC3 audio.
And Flip4Mac for playing wmv files in QuickTime.
