10.4: Install OS X without first rebooting from DVD
This did work with previous versions of the OS X install discs, but for multiple discs you would have to boot into the half-way installed system and finish of the installation.
I have performed this with 10.2 and 10.3. However, I think in 10.4 the installer became pickier about how it wants to run: when booted in 10.1 I could install 10.2, and from 10.2 I could install 10.3. But when booted from 10.3 I could not install 10.4 on another partition: it seems the 10.4 installer requires 10.4... so in that case you have to boot from the disc first.

Actually, you can also install 10.3 and earlier with multi-disc sets using the OSInstall.mpkg workaround as well. Just create compressed disk images through Disk Utility, mount them all, and then run the OSInstall package. I used this to re-install an iBook via Target disk mode, since it wouldn't boot from the stock 10.3 CD due to system version. |
