Alternatively, you could type the following instead:
open -a Finder

Or you could use spotlight to open up the activity monitor and use activity monitor to kill the finder....

If you kill finder via the cli
killall Finder
or via the activity monitor, it does not respawn. That's why you have to either use
open -a
(the -a stands for application; if you omit the -a, it tries to open it as a document and fails), the long method described in the hint, or perhaps, the simplest method of all... clicking on the Finder icon in the dock. If you find yourself needing to restart finder often because of tweaking the system, just make an applescript and put it in your scripts folder. all it needs is:

quit application "Finder"
do shell script ("open -a Finder")
If you find yourself needing to restart finder often because it's crashing or becoming non-responsive, you should follow Rob's advice.
