If you kill finder via the cli
or via the activity monitor, it does not respawn. That's why you have to either use (the -a stands for application; if you omit the -a, it tries to open it as a document and fails), the long method described in the hint, or perhaps, the simplest method of all... clicking on the Finder icon in the dock.
