You can "pair" a remote with an individual iMac, though by default this is not the case.

My gripe is that Apple chose to use an IR remote and hence restrict it to the new iMac (and to line of sight). If they'd created a bluetooth remote instead (bundled with iMacs, and available separately) and made FrontRow generally available I'm sure plenty of people with Powerbooks or Mac Minis would have bought one - I certainly would have. And the remote would only control the machine it was paired with.
