Some hints, for some odd reason (probably advertising related) only show up when you're logged in.

This really sucks, because the login mechanism is so poorly implemented that it doesn't redirect you to the hint you want, nor does it provide you with a login box on the "you aren't logged in" page. And since I read in NetNewsWire, which doesn't preserve cookies across sessions, I have to log in about once a day.

BTW, the above is about the only thing I *don't* like about Mac OS X Hints, but as I've been dealing with it every day for literally years now, it's gotten to me a bit. :-)

Thanks for the explanation, Nicholas.

I've been using Safari RSS to monitor for new hints on this site but have that annoying login/cookie problem with other site feeds in NNW.

My main objection with this site is lack of RSS for individual hints or e-mail notification of new comments. That inhibits my posting here because it's tedious to check for feedback. Or maybe I'm missing some way to conveniently monitor for hints comments?

It would also be useful to printer-friendly versions of hints *and* comments, e.g. for local storage, annotation, and fast searching in one of my DEVONthink Pro databases.

Use another tab to login

sabi: the login mechanism is so poorly implemented that it doesn't redirect you to the hint you want

Workaround: when a hint's page shows that "members-only" notice, switch to another tab or window containing another macOSXhints page and login THERE (assuming you do have a MacOSXhints account). Then switch back to the previous hint's tab/window and reload: the notice should be gone and the right hint will show up.

If you look up rss titles in NetNewsWire Lite and send (Right arrow key) interesting pages to load in a browser's tabs in the background instead of NNW itself, when a hint says "members only" you'll usually have other tabs at hand to login without losing that hint's url.
