ominous clicking noises

Indeed. My 3G iPod died about six months ago. Initial symptoms were it taking longer to sync, and iTunes beachballing for even longer than usual.

Eventually I got around to checking the system log (/var/log/system.log) and discovered a few reports of disk errors on the iPod's drive. Complete failure followed within a week or so.

So firstly, make sure you have nothing irreplaceable on there! (Backups are ALWAYS a good idea, whether we're talking about inbuild HDs, removable ones, cameras, phones, or wherever you have important data!) Secondly, keep an eye on the system log. And thirdly, when you start seeing errors, prepare for the worst :-(
