Interesting.

Having set up two side by side I've found that the remotes will work on more than one iMac at a time so I'd imagine you could also use this hint to lock down/put to sleep an entire lab at once (if they're all facing you of course).

Or even maliciously put someone else's iMac to sleep during a Quake game or when they're trying to work...

Why aren't remotes keyed to individual iMacs?

You can "pair" a remote with an individual iMac, though by default this is not the case.

My gripe is that Apple chose to use an IR remote and hence restrict it to the new iMac (and to line of sight). If they'd created a bluetooth remote instead (bundled with iMacs, and available separately) and made FrontRow generally available I'm sure plenty of people with Powerbooks or Mac Minis would have bought one - I certainly would have. And the remote would only control the machine it was paired with.
