10.4: OS X 10.4.3 update released
You don't have to buy .Mac to use a .Mac name. Sign up for a free trial, and when it expires, you can still use the name for iChat.

Having a .Mac screen name won't let you use the encryption feature; you need a real account. The Read Me even notes that the feature only works for real, non-trial accounts.

Sign up for a free trial, and when it expires, you can still use the name for iChat. nonsense. 1) encyption doesn't work with trial accounts. 2) when the trial expires, you can not use the screen name as it becomes available for signup again after a period of time.

Screen names for the free trial will continue to be active forever. It's the .Mac extras (hosting, e-mail, etc) that no longer work. |
