You don't have to buy .Mac to use a .Mac name. Sign up for a free trial, and when it expires, you can still use the name for iChat.

Having a .Mac screen name won't let you use the encryption feature; you need a real account. The Read Me even notes that the feature only works for real, non-trial accounts.

nonsense. 1) encyption doesn't work with trial accounts. 2) when the trial expires, you can not use the screen name as it becomes available for signup again after a period of time.

You're right that iChat will not work with anything but a paid .Mac account, but you're blatantly wrong that if you sign up for a free trial that it will no expire. Screen names for the free trial will continue to be active forever. It's the .Mac extras (hosting, e-mail, etc) that no longer work.
