10.4: OS X 10.4.3 update released
Authored by: macg4dave on Nov 01, '05 01:34:58PM

I hate update mac os x. I had 10.4.2 running fine then i go and install 10.4.3 and I can't logout,Restart, shutdown or force quit plus my sound keys don't work

my console log is slow filling up with:

2005-11-01 21:20:27.307 loginwindow[118] *** Assertion failure in -[NSThemeFrame initWithFrame:], AppKit.subproj/NSView.m:710
2005-11-01 21:20:27.308 loginwindow[118] Uninitialized rectangle passed to [View initWithFrame:].

Anyone else with this bug?

10.4: OS X 10.4.3 update released

When I installed the update, and hit the Restart button it did not restart my computer. I went through and manually quit all my apps, then logged out.

Logging out took way longer than usual, and the login dialog did not show up, I waited a very long time (over 10 minutes).

I assumed this had something to do with FUS as I had another user logged in, and I have had issues before with trying to reboot with another user logged in.

I force rebooted the machine from the front panel and all is well.

It sounds like your problems are much worse then mine were, but I give this account to you in case it might help in some way.

Good luck!

Won't restart

Same thing happened with my G4. Hard restart worked and no problems today. No other users were logged in. Laptops and G5 were fine.

Ya, had one computer do that at work. Manually powered off, then on again. It refused to boot. Booted into single-user (command-s) and ran "fsck -yf", and then "exit". When that didn't work tried "safe" mode. Reboot and hold the "shift" key. No luck there, either, so booted into target mode and tried a repair disk from another G5. Tried booting from OSX cd/dvd but that stalled too. Using TechTool Pro 4.0.5 worked (boot from CD). Alternatively I could have used DiskWarrior to check it out. The G5 finally came back up, after some massage. :)

I didn't check my console log when it happened, but I had exactly the same problem.

As per a previous hint listed here, I'd added "-v" to the "boot-args" variable in the nvram so I could see all the text messages on boot. I removed this setting, and upon reboot (couldn't use the Finder, had to type "reboot" as root in a console window; I expect "sudo reboot" would work just as well) all was well.

In my googling on the subject, other people have had similar issues and ended up resetting the nvram settings to fix the problem (along with a bunch of other stuff, but the nvram thing was the key for me).

Hope that helps.

After installing 10.3.4, I have the same problem with my ICE iBook G3 700Mhz. I can not shutdown, restart, or log out. I can only restart via Terminal commmand "su root", then "reboot"
