Change Apple's installers to update non-boot volumes

I've done the same things myself to allow installers of applications that wouldn't otherwise install on a different volume.

However, you need to be careful. Some applications (and in particular, system updates) write to the /Library or /System/Library areas, as well as the /Applications area. Not only that, but sometimes symlinks are created as well.

You could end up with a hosed system where an update was written into /My/Volume/System/Library, but the symlink was still created in /System/Library on whatever boot volume you have. Some of the functionality in iCal is hosted from /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/AppleAppSupport.framework, and there's almost certainly the occasional update to /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/iPod.framework with iTunes.

However, these directories are easily copyable with Finder, and in fact can also work if you put them into /Library/Frameworks or /Library/PrivateFrameworks. I've used that to host up-to-date versions of iCal etc. on a /Network/Applications share, as long as /Network/Library is also made available.
