Rip losslessly to flac with abcde
Authored by: TekkNick on Oct 21, '05 10:49:30AM

FLAC is indeed lossless. I just finished re-RIPing my entire collection so that as new/better formats come out I can re-encode without that hassle. I used FLAC to minimize the storage requirement. Paranoia got the best of me. I was not going to go through all that hassle (some 500 discs) only to find out that the decoded FLAC files weren't bit-for-bit copies of the originals. I wrote a script that encoded, decoded and diffed every track before permanently deleting the WAV. I can't speak for previous versions, but flac 1.1.2 is as reliable as zip with a lot higher compression ratio.
