Confirm 'Change Extension' dialog via the keyboard
A real hint would be a way to kill this stupid dialog.

"A real hint would be a way to kill this stupid dialog." Quoted For Truth. Anyone have an idea where to start looking for this dialog?

I'm in line for that hint too! Someone, please!

I'd very much appreciate a hint on preventing this dialog from ever appearing, too!

Yes, yes, that'd be the ticket!

I'm I missing something? What key sequence is '?-Clear'? Is that "Shift + / + Clear"? Meaning I have to use the shift key to get a question mark. I've never heard of the question mark as a modifier key. Also I doesn't seem to work. Please explain.
How to post those special glyphs
On this system, when you preview a post containing numeric entity codes, they are interpreted as characters. So the preview reads right, but if you then submit the post with characters instead of the codes, they become question marks.
The way around this, if you have a lot of codes as in this post, is to edit in a separate window, paste the results into the edit box fresh every time, and (especially) remember to paste it in once more after your final preview, when you submit! Rob, perhaps you could edit the original hint text and use this method to put ⌘ In fact, I think this comment should be a hint unto itself, regarding this site instead of OS X!

My above method is unnecessary now that this comment engine is accepting Unicode. Now we can just insert characters like ⇧⌘⌥ in the edit box and they no longer become question marks.

Note that , U+F8FF (and hence
) is an Apple symbol on Macs, but not on Windows machines. I know, this being macosxhints.com, most won't notice the difference. In Wingdings, it's actually the Windows symbol... (It's the last entity in the private range, so no guarantees what's displayed.)
Easy
Just check "Show all file extensions" in the "Advanced" tab of the Finder's Preferences and it won't ask if you're sure you know what you're doing when you edit them.

That doesn't work on my MacOS X 10.4.2 system, or the other one I have at home. It didn't work in Panther either.

Doens NOT work here on 10.4.2

Doesn't work in 10.4_ That is one of the first things I make sure is active along with disabling the Trash Warning [on every Sys Upgrade] 'cause Apple likes to default that to annoy advanced users for some reason_

My mothers on-line banking service lets you download files detailing account balance. The problem with those files again was that the ".txt" extension was missing. She was completely lost trying to chose the program to open those files in. I solved this by making an applescript that she could drop her files on and it would add the extension to them. |
