Use a black image to instantly blank an Apple LCD
The problem with this hint and all replays in this thread is that these solutions are not really turning off the screen. They are dimming it. If you try mentioned bitmap solution, or black screensavers, screen IS getting black but still in a small room as mine you see exactly that it is not turned off - brightness is very visible and annoying during night time. Of course I can set in System preferences (Energy saver) option to put a display to sleep after one minute. I don't like this either because I don't like to have screen turned off during my work. What really I am missing is a small app, script or command from terminal to turn off the display of my flat panel mac.

I spent a week or so trying to do this; what it comes down to is interfacing with the power plane of the IO system and telling the screen to shut off. From what I read (and tried) it isn't possible to do this without writing a kernel module. Seems crazy, but that's the way it looked. I'd be very happy for someone to prove me wrong... |
