Recover songs from a sick iPod via Disk Utility

In the case of a sick, irreperable iPod directory, one can go a step further to get songs. Using the program FileJuicer, you can extract files that exist in a dmg without having to mount it. Also, if the disk is too messed up to image with Disk Utility, you can use the dd command (explained in another hint). This strategy works with a variety of drives and formats and whatever files it is the FileJuicer is kind enough to retrieve for you.
