Since this method means you have to copy everything off to a disk image, Restore, then copy everything back from the disk image, wouldn't it be faster just to restore and reload from iTunes?

Based on the original post, I assume that he was using manual updating for his iPod.

Therefore, doing like this means he can keep his playlists, playcounts, and ratings. That is very convenient.
