10.4: Avoid Spotlight issues when adding Classic
I wish I could test this out but ever since upgrading to Tiger, my Classic installation has ceased to function. I've tried every "fix" on Apple's website plus every one I found on the Internet. The Mac OS 9.2 splash window comes up and the progress meter never updates. Starting Classic would be nice because my HP scanner (4400c) is not supported under OS X or any 3rd-party vendor driver for that matter.

Do you have the DivX plugin installed in OS X (look in /Library/QuickTime or ~/Library/QuickTime folders)? Try removing it manually or using the installer to uninstall it (recommended). There's a beta of the new DivX 6 plugin in the DivX Labs site the fixes various issues related to Tiger.

Wow. That did the trick!

Call or email HP and they'll send you a new scanner compatible w/OS X. I got a new 4070 w/built-in transparency unit, all for free if you send yr old 4400c back. Sweet! Sure beats mucking around reinstalling classic. No joke, it's cause they claimed they'd release OS X drivers for the 4400c, but then the engineers couldn't follow through.

I'll have to try that! Thanks. |
