How do people use the "check" feature?
Authored by: Lectrick on Oct 04, '05 11:31:53AM

I never understood this feature.

If you have songs you don't want to hear (and therefore "uncheck"), why do you bother having them in your library? Or, why not set up a playlist excluding those? (or did I just answer my own question...)

I didn't understand the star system either (how "good" a song is seems to change constantly with the # of listens) until I assigned the following semantic meaning to each number of stars:

***** - Can play at a party, has timeless popular appeal, possibly too cheesy for regular listening
**** - I am in a minority of people who really like this song, but damn it, it is good
*** - Others say this song is good, but I have yet to check it out and have an opinion on it
** - (no meaning attributed yet)
* - There is a problem with the encoding of this song, its tag information, or it is scratchy or otherwise imperfect; fix it (this is how I indicate to my desktop from my iPod which tracks need to be looked at, since the rating synchronizes)

I use the uncheck feature to exclude things from importing to my ipod.

The problem with the "uncheck" is that it also prevents songs from being played in playlists and such. The only way you can play an unchecked song in iTunes itself is to directly choose the song.

I really wish Apple would provide a separate flag for "on iPod". Their checkbox serves a dual purpose, unfortunately.

(I guess the same could be asked about my carefully preserved piles of MacWorld back-issues I never re-read.) I believe the enabled check box was originally designed for excluding CD tracks from being imported. Likewise, un-enabled library tracks will be ignored when converting or when copying to other devices. It has always been a feature of iTunes (though not SoundJam). Rarely are legacy features removed from an application.

I use the check/uncheck for several reasons:

1. I keep a large library of sound effects, and I never want them played unless I specifically want to use them for something.

2. I own songs that have explicit lyrics that I don't want popping up when my kids play any smart list by genre--like Prince's B-sides, or just about any hip-hop these days. It's also nice to know "Because I Got High" by Afroman won't play in my "Pop" playlist when the in-laws are visiting.

3. I teach music and use iTunes to control a number of accompaniments, and don't want those to show up in a random party shuffle.

4. Just because I own a song doesn't mean I want to hear it. I have lots of concert recordings that I keep for archival purposes, but that doesn't mean I want to listen to them.
