...is to run Firefox, and install the Flashblock plug-in. That way, stupid animations and irritating moving adverts won't even load!

(Unless you click on them. So you don't miss anything you don't want to.)

And PithHelmet for Safari. The latest version (2.6.1) has a command to toggle blocking of all plugins if you want to stop 'em after they're already loaded.
