You could copy and modify an xinitrc in your home directory and sense changes with "find /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc -newer ~/.xinitrc". If so, "xmessage /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is newer than ~/.xinitrc".

Best of both worlds, none of the disadvantages.
